AI citations now come with a price tag
Google has started paying publishers when their pages feed an AI answer; Cloudflare started charging AI crawlers at the door and OpenAI turned ChatGPT ads into a proper media buy. At the same time, one unannounced change at OpenAI wiped out 86% of Reddit’s ChatGPT citations. Being cited is now worth real money, and it can disappear overnight.
Key takeaways
Spread your citations across at least three source types.
One quiet change removed 86% of ChatGPT citations from Reddit. Spread your presence across earned coverage, named LinkedIn voices and authoritative third-party sources, so no single sourcing rule-change can switch you off.
Audit your AI crawler access this month.
Cloudflare’s new defaults and Google’s payment pilot mean letting AI crawlers in is now a commercial decision. Someone in your business controls that setting, even if they don’t realise it. Find out what it’s set to before it costs you visibility.
Budget earned citations and ChatGPT ads as separate lines.
ChatGPT ads will soon compete for the same budget as GEO. Measure both, engine by engine, but don’t let a paid slot next to the answer stand in for being trusted inside it.
01: Google and Cloudflare put a price on the citation
Google has confirmed an early-stage AI contribution pilot that pays publishers for AI answers when their pages contribute significantly to answers in the Gemini app, AI Overviews and AI Mode. Pages only get paid when they’re used to generate the answer. If a page just confirms a fact or gets linked afterwards, it earns nothing. Publishers see monthly earnings in a Search Console panel and can opt out. Early reaction was cool, with one executive calling the panel “quite black box” and others arguing that accepting sets a bad precedent.
On 15 September, Cloudflare’s new defaults went live. “Mixed-use” crawlers, which combine search indexing, agent fetching and model training under one user agent, are now blocked from any page carrying ads for new customers and for free-plan sites that hadn’t changed their settings. Pay Per Crawl also became Pay Per Use, paying publishers when content is actually used rather than fetched. Why it matters: crawl access is now a commercial setting, and a default can switch off a brand’s AI visibility without anyone deciding to. For content owners, being cited is starting to look like revenue rather than reach, which changes the GEO business case from “be seen” to “be paid”.
02: More AI content, fewer results
Orbit Media asked 1,042 content marketers how well their blogs were working. Only 14% said “very well”, the lowest figure in the survey’s 12-year history and roughly half the 2022 result. AI use reached 92.4% and showed no link with better outcomes, even though it cut average writing time to 3 hours 20 minutes a post. The practice most associated with success, collaborating with influencers and outside experts, has fallen from 25% adoption in 2017 to 7%.
The platforms are pushing back on volume. Google’s September 2026 spam update, its fourth of 2026, began rolling out on 24 September alongside reports of a new AI spam detector, SAFE, with scaled low-value AI content the likely target. LinkedIn disclosed that around 30% of comments between April and June were fully AI-generated. Demand is moving the same way: Fiverr’s Holiday Marketing Index found 67% of search specialists seeing rising retailer demand for GEO, against 56% for traditional rankings, and 83% say clients now hire them for strategy rather than execution. Why it matters: output is cheap, so both AI engines and audiences are leaning on the signals that are hard to fake. Named expertise, original data and third-party validation are what separate a brand from the noise.

03: Citations are proving fragile, but earned media durable
Reddit held a steady 3.8% of ChatGPT Search citations from mid-July to early August. By mid-August it was down to roughly 0.5% and maintains that level now. Analysts trace the 86% fall to OpenAI changing how ChatGPT fans out queries, leaning on targeted site: searches instead of broad web retrieval. Institutional, government and official brand sites have picked up the share Reddit lost, while Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode showed gradual declines in Reddit citations over the same period.
Why it matters: a visibility strategy built on one platform’s sourcing habits can be deleted by a backend change. This is why we suggest that brands have a PR citation strategy, which we already run for clients. We map the prompts that matter in a client’s category, find the third-party sources each AI engine actually pulls from for those prompts, and build earned coverage in exactly those places, so visibility doesn’t hang on one platform’s sourcing rules. We check it every month, because a citation you had in August might be gone by October.

04: Paid visibility moved in next to the answer
OpenAI has made conversion optimisation with impression billing generally available in ChatGPT ads by adding 7, 14 and 30-day attribution windows, and split targeting by device and platform. Ads launched in ChatGPT in February and passed $1bn within 200 days, and by the end of the month were live across 31 European countries, including Germany and Austria. ChatGPT crossed roughly a billion weekly users in August and now drives 92.4% of standalone AI referral traffic.
Why it matters: paid and organic visibility inside AI answers are starting to blur, much as they did on Google’s results page two decades ago. Budget questions follow quickly, starting with whether GEO and ChatGPT ads come out of the same pot. Our view is that buying placement next to an answer doesn’t replace being cited inside it. Ads buy presence; citations buy credibility, and credibility is what moves a sceptical buyer. For EMEA marketers, this is now a live planning question rather than a US curiosity.

05: The click evidence went academic
Recent research from a University of Pennsylvania and Northeastern field experiment shared insights that independent research publishers have been asking for. The research followed 1,100 people for a week and found that those given AI Mode ran fewer search sessions, trusted Google less and rated it less useful, while removing AI Overviews increased clicks to websites with no measurable hit to satisfaction. A University of Washington working paper, not yet peer reviewed, estimates AI Overviews cost English Wikipedia around 100 million search referrals a month. Pew found a traditional result was clicked 8% of the time when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without. Comscore now puts AI Overviews on 39% of US desktop searches.
Google’s John Mueller agreed publicly that Search Console’s generative AI report, which only rolled out globally on 31 August, isn’t yet useful for position data: impressions count even when nobody scrolls to the link, and every link inside an Overview inherits the Overview’s position. Only about 14% of marketers track AI citation visibility at all. That matters because the traffic that does arrive is worth more. One study across 54 advertisers found AI referrals up 163%, with those visitors converting at around 1.5 times the rate of organic search.

What is Archetype VISTA?
VISTA is the diagnostic behind every audit we run. It checks five things in plain terms: how visible you are in AI answers (Visibility), which topics you could own (Identification), which sources AI is reading about you (Signals), how much AI trusts your content (Trust), and whether that visibility is actually improving over time (Attribution). In short, it shows you exactly where you stand with AI search today, and what to fix first. Want a Vista snapshot of your own brand? Just reply.
A few quick questions we get asked
Q: How do I stop my AI citations disappearing overnight?
A: Don’t depend on one source. One OpenAI change cut Reddit’s ChatGPT citations by 86%. Our PR citation strategy finds the sources each AI engine pulls from for the prompts in your category, then builds earned coverage there. We check it every month.
Q: Could my crawler settings be hurting my AI visibility?
A: Possibly. Since 15 September, Cloudflare’s new defaults block some AI crawlers without anyone deciding to. A VISTA snapshot shows which sources AI engines are reading about you and what to fix first.
Q: Why isn’t AI-written content working?
A: Because everyone’s doing it. 92% of content marketers use AI, but only 14% report strong results. Named expertise and original data are what still stand out, and our thought leadership programmes are built on both.
Q: How do I measure AI visibility?
A: Only 14% of marketers do, and Search Console isn’t reliable for it yet. VISTA tracks whether you’re visible, trusted and cited in AI answers, and whether that’s improving. Reply for a snapshot of your brand.
